Fortnum & Mason Caviar Lidded Pot
This is a Victorian era Fortnum & Mason Caviar lidded pot, a period when luxury items like Russian caviar were sold to the upper class in these transfer-printed containers. Fortnum & Mason owes its start to strict royal etiquette. Queen Anne's court required brand new wax candles every single night. William Fortnum pocketed the half-burned luxury wax stubs, melted them down, and sold them for a tidy profit. With his savings, he partnered with Hugh Mason to open a small grocery shop in St. James's Market. This pot has a chip on the rim of the lid and on the inside rim of the base as shown in the pictures. This pot has been recovered from a Victorian dig site.
