Burgess's Anchovy Paste Lidded Advertising Pot
This is a Victorian era ironstone Burgess's Anchovy Paste lidded advertising pot. The brand was founded by John Burgess in London in 1760. The company started as an "Italian Oilman" shop importing luxury Mediterranean foods like olive oil, hams, and anchovies. Their anchovy paste became an iconic Victorian staple enjoyed on toast and biscuits. This container dates c1908 to 1936. The crest on the lid features the detailed transfer-printed British Royal Coat of Arms along with the phrase "By Appointment", noting the company's status as official purveyors to the British monarchy. There are a few small chips on the rims of the lid and base. This pot was recovered from a Victorian dig site.
