Available is an Oriental Toothpaste lidded pot from the Co-operative Wholesale Society Ld., Newcastle on Tyne. The Wholesale Society allowed individual shops to bypass middleman markups by pooling their buying power. The term Oriental Toothpaste was purely a clever marketing strategy. In Victorian Britain, anything associated with the "Orient" conjured images of luxury, mystery, and exotic ingredients. Marketing it this way allowed chemists to charge a premium price by convincing consumers that it contained rare, high-quality eastern botanicals and spices that would marvelously "whiten, beautify, and preserve" teeth. This pot has been recovered from a Victorian dump site. There are chips on the lid and base as shown, as well as a hairline in the base.
