J. Sainsbury's Potted Meats Pot
Available is a J. Sainsbury's Potted Meats pot. These heavy ceramic ironstone jars held cooked, pureed meat paste. Before household refrigeration, the meat was tightly packed into the pots and sealed with a thick layer of clarified butter or fat to keep out air and prevent spoilage. The central design features the iconic "Sains-berry" rebus logo, created by the founder's private secretary, Laurence Evamy. A rebus is a visual word puzzle. The logo features the letters "AINS" nestled inside a large letter "S", which is wrapped around a branch of holly berries-spelling out "Sainsberry". It was used heavily on their bloater (fish) and meat pastes and was officially registered in 1909. This pot is heavily stained and crazed. There is a chip on the bottom edge of the pot as shown in the picture. This pot has been recovered from a Victorian dig site.
