Ironstone French Mustard Advertising Pot
This is an ironstone Moutarde de Maille pot. Maille Mustard is one of the most famous, historic, and widely available brands of French mustard in the world. Founded in 1747 by Antoine-Claude Maille, the company originally began as a specialized vinegar manufacturer in Marseille. In 18th-century France, vinegars and mustards were made by the same craftsmen because high-quality vinegar is the core ingredient used to blend smooth mustard. Maille was incredibly successful and famously appointed as the official, exclusive mustard supplier to King Louis XV of France, as well as the royal courts of Russia, Austria, and Hungary. The Digoin and Sarreguemines stamp on the bottom was used between 1919 and the early 1920s dating this pot to immediately following World War I. This pot is stained due to being recovered from a Victorian dig site.
