Balance scales in Victorian-era grocery stores rested on plates like this one to weigh goods such as meat, dairy, or produce. This English ironstone example was manufactured by William Ellis in Burslem, England around 1900, featuring a black transfer print of "Justitia et Fides" (Justice and Fidelity) depicting a figure with a balance scale, a robed figure, and a lion. There is one "flea bite" at the bottom edge of the front.

This is a vintage/antique, pre-owned item with normal wear due to its age.
