CHOICE Thames Conservancy Enamel Boat License Plaques
Available is a CHOICE of 3 Thames Conservancy enamel boat license plaques. The Thames Conservancy managed the River Thanes from 1857 to 1974. To regulate traffic, they required all active river craft to mount these vitrified enamel-on-iron plates to both sides of the hull. Many of these plates end up recovered decades later by mudlarks and magnet fishers along the historic foreshores.
Plaque A most likely dates to the 1920s or 1930s.
Plaques B & C are dated 1945. The large numbers printed as a fraction identify the unique vessel registration number (the top number) and the vessel class or lock fee tier (bottom number).
