Tebbutt & Co. Potted Meats Pot
This is an antique English white ironstone Tebbutt & Co. Potted Meats advertising pot. It dates back to approximately the 1880s. The process of "potted meats" involved finely mincing or pounding cooked meats, packing them tightly into pottery jars, and sealing them with a thick layer of clarified butter or lard to prevent spoilage. The elaborate scrollwork proudly displays awards won by the manufacturer. The central coat of arms depicts a horse head and two greyhounds to serve as the heraldic supporters holding up the central shield. The slogan "Good Ware Makes A Quick Market" at the bottom of the shield is an old English Business proverb meaning high-quality products sell themselves quickly. There is a stylized pork pie at the center of the shield. There is one tiny chip on the rim of the pot shown in the pictures. This pot has been recovered from a Victorian dig site.
