Rare Strathern & District Dairy Stoneware Cream Pot

Rare Strathern & District Dairy Stoneware Cream Pot

This is a stoneware advertising cream pot for Stathern & District Dairy, which operated out of the rural village of Stathern in Leicestershire, England.  This region is highly famous for its historic dairy farming and cheese production.  Pots like this were produced from the late 1880s through the 1920s. Dairies used small, durable stoneware jars to sell single portions of fresh cream or thick clotted cream to local households.  Customers returned the empty pottery crocks to the milkman or local dairy shop to be washed, sanitized, and refilled.  This pot has been recovered from a Victorian dig site.
