This is an antique Chinese stoneware ginger jar with a raised scrolling pattern along the top. These jars were used to store and transport essential commodities like ginger, salt, oil, and precious herbs. When these vessels arrived in Europe via trade ships, Westerners fell in love with the refined craftsmanship. Because many of the imported jars still contained preserved ginger, Europeans coined the term "ginger jar". They became immense symbols of wealth, luxury, and sophistication in European homes. This jar has been recovered from a Victorian dig site.
