James Keiller & Sons Dundee Marmalade Pot
Available is a 1-pound chubby size James Keiller & Sons Dundee Marmalade pot, c1892. James Keiller & Sons began in the late 1700s in Dundee, Scotland, after a stranded cargo ship carrying bitter Seville oranges was purchased by a local grocer. His mother, Janet Keiller, boiled down the unsweet citrus with sugar and shredded rinds, creating the first commercial modern orange marmalade. The pot is stamped Maling on the bottom by Maling Pottery Company in Newcastle, which produced the heavy jars. This pot is considered a "chubby" size as compared to most standard 1-pound Keiller jars which are taller and narrower. This pot is stained but does not have any chips. It has been recovered from a Victorian dig site.
