J. Sainsbury's Bloater Paste Pot

J. Sainsbury's Bloater Paste Pot

Available is a J. Sainsbury's Bloater Paste pot.  Bloater paste was a popular spread made from smoked herring (bloaters) sold at early Sainsbury's provisions counters in London.  The central design features the iconic "Sains-berry" rebus logo, created by the founder's private secretary, Laurence Evamy.  A rebus is a visual word puzzle.  The logo features the letters "AINS" nestled inside a large letter "S", which is wrapped around a branch of holly berries-spelling out "Sainsberry".  This pot is heavily stained and crazed.  This pot has been recovered from a Victorian dig site.
