Custom Framed Antique Chromolithograph Titled "Gold Finch & Canary Mules", c1875-1878

This is an antique chromolithograph bookplate print which features birds titled "Goldfinch & Canary Mules" from the publication 'The Illustrated Book of Canaries and Cagebirds', published by Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Co.  This bookplate has been custom framed using archival quality hemp mat, glass & foam board.  The frame is a bronze-colored wood that can read either black or dark brown, with a fine bead detail.  It comes ready to hang with a sawtooth hanger.  There is minor foxing on the bookplate.

A chromolithograph is a multi-colored print made using a unique chemical printing process developed in the 19th century.  Artists draw the image onto flat limestone blocks using greasy crayons or inks.  Every individual color requires its own separate stone block.  The paper passes through the press repeatedly, precisely aligning each new color layer over the last.
