Antique Wooden Biscuit Mold, c1930

Antique Wooden Biscuit Mold, c1930

This is an antique wooden speculaas mold.  It was used to press traditional, spiced Dutch or Belgian biscuits.  The hand-carved details are classic to European folklore and maritime history.  The ship represents trade, exploration, and the Dutch Golden Age.  The rooster is a traditional symbol of vigilance, dawn, and good luck.  The windmill is the iconic symbol of the Netherlands, often used on these baking molds.  The monkey is a playful, historical motif frequently found on antique European cookie boards.  This mold has been sourced from England.
