Antique Salt-Glazed Stoneware Storage Jar
This is an antique salt-glazed stoneware jar. It features a banded decoration, a common aesthetic for storage jars from the mid-19th century. The maker's mark indicates this piece was manufactured by J. Borne & Son at the Denby Potteries near Derby, England. This particular stamp was utilized primarily between 1971 and 1880. The word "Patentees" highlights their proprietary "vitreous stone" formula, which made the pottery non-porous and highly reliable for holding liquids, inks and preserves without absorbing them. There is a chip along the bottom edge of the pot as shown. It has been recovered from a Victorian dig site.
