Antique English Stoneware Ginger Beer Bottle
This antique stoneware bottle was made by John Haydock, a prominent mineral water manufacturer based in Darwen, Lancashire, England, c1880-1910. This specific shape-a "blob top" or "screw neck" stoneware bottle-was standard for ginger beer or "stone pop". The thick stoneware kept the fermented beverage cool and contained the high pressure from carbonation. This bottle has a chip along the bottom edge as shown. It was recovered from a Victorian dig site.
